Wiscasset Railroad Buildings
The two-foot gauge Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway terminated at the Maine Central Railroad tracks and a series of waterfront piers in Wiscasset, Maine. My drawings of the passenger station were published in the Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette. This building was converted from an open passenger shelter located a few hundred yards north of the Maine Central Station. My drawings were made from photographs and ICC records with help from Bill Kerr. Left click on the drawings and photos to enlarge them.
I also drew, from photographs, a neat little building that sat on the end of the pier. While this structure has often been called a station, I doubt that it was. It may have housed a crude office for the pier boss, but I think it was used primarily to store mooring lines that held the coastal schooners to the pier. These were heavy, two or three inch diameter hemp ropes. They would have been hung in the tower to dry before being coiled and stored so that they wouldn’t rot.
No photos have surfaced of the north side. This building was built on the north edge of the pier, so there probably were no doors on that side, but there might have been a window opposite the passage door.
May 28, 2016 Addendum
I am now convinced that I drew the addition to this building too short. It should be about six feet longer, with five foot wide sliding doors. The tower section is okay.
